Weight-loss surgery in Egypt for Saudi patients: eligibility, real risks and costs

Weight-loss surgery is a serious operation, not a cosmetic shortcut — and the most useful thing anyone can tell you before you travel is what surgery cannot do, alongside what it can. This guide covers how eligibility is actually assessed, the complications that genuinely occur, what published costs look like in Egypt, and how long you need to stay. If you are researching sleeve or bypass abroad, read the risk section before the price section.

Eligibility is a clinical decision, not a booking decision

Bariatric surgery is assessed on body mass index, comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension, your history of previous weight-loss attempts, and your general fitness for anaesthesia.

Not everyone who wants surgery is eligible for it. The choice between sleeve and bypass is made by the surgeon for clinical reasons — not price, and not because one is easier to schedule.

Hayakkom does not assess eligibility. We coordinate access to a licensed bariatric surgeon who does. If the surgeon declines to operate, or recommends a different procedure from the one you had in mind, that means the system is working correctly.

The risks, plainly

Published complications for sleeve gastrectomy and bypass include bleeding, staple-line leak, infection, long-term nutritional deficiency requiring lifelong supplementation, and reflux.

Weight regain is common: roughly 10–20% of patients regain a significant portion of the weight over time.

Loose skin after major weight loss is very common and often requires separate body-contouring procedures later, at additional cost.

Long-term success depends heavily on sustained dietary and behavioural change. Surgery reduces stomach capacity; it does not remove the need to change how you eat. Multidisciplinary programmes combining surgery with nutritional support and behavioural follow-up achieve better outcomes than surgery alone.

Anyone promising you a specific number of kilograms is not being straight with you.

What published costs look like in Egypt

Documented platform data places sleeve gastrectomy in Egypt in the USD 1,500–3,500 range, averaging around USD 2,333 based on actual invoices from a large sample of clinics. Surgeons vary noticeably within and beyond that range — some all-inclusive packages are advertised around USD 2,700, while highly experienced professors price at USD 5,500–6,300. One Egyptian surgeon publishes a price starting from around EGP 38,000.

These are published third-party figures for context, not a quotation from Hayakkom. Your actual cost depends on the procedure chosen, the hospital, length of stay, pre-operative tests and any complications.

More important than the headline figure is what the package includes: surgeon’s fee, anaesthesia, hospital nights, tests, and above all follow-up. Ask for that itemised in writing before you travel.

How long you need to stay in Egypt

Plan on 7–10 days. The realistic sequence: pre-operative tests and anaesthetic clearance on arrival, then the operation, then 1–2 nights in hospital, then monitored recovery before you are cleared to fly.

You will be on a staged diet — liquids, then puréed, then soft food over several weeks. That continues long after you return home.

Do not build a busy travel itinerary around this procedure. Patients who plan sightseeing in the days after bariatric surgery generally cannot do it, and should not try.

What to prepare before travelling

Recent blood work and any imaging you have. A list of current medications and doses. Your full weight history and previous attempts. Documentation of comorbidities — diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, joint problems. Details of any previous abdominal surgery. Your height and weight for BMI calculation.

Sending these in advance lets the surgeon review your case before you commit to flights — the best way to avoid travelling for a procedure you may turn out not to be eligible for.

What Hayakkom does and does not do

We coordinate: surgeon and hospital selection, scheduling pre-operative tests and anaesthetic clearance, hospital admission, accommodation suitable for recovery with appropriate food options, airport and hospital transfers, Arabic-speaking accompaniment, dietitian follow-up coordination, and structured follow-up with the surgical team after you return.

We will not arrange surgery for anyone a surgeon has not cleared, we will not give a final price before clinical assessment, and we do not guarantee any amount of weight loss.
