Luxor: temples, royal tombs and the start of your Nile cruise
Luxor, ancient Thebes, holds more of Egypt's great monuments in one place than anywhere else. With the right season and a calm plan, it is wonderful with children.
Why Luxor
The ruins of ancient Thebes — the temples of Karnak and Luxor on the East Bank and the royal tombs and funerary temples of the West Bank — have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979 (UNESCO). For families, the joy of Luxor is that the great sites are close together, the city is small, and the Nile is always in view.
East Bank: Karnak and Luxor Temple
Karnak is a vast temple complex built and expanded over many centuries. The forest of giant columns in the Great Hypostyle Hall is the moment children remember. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, wear hats and carry water — there is little shade.
Luxor Temple stands in the heart of the city. It is lit after dark, which makes an evening visit cooler and very atmospheric. The two temples were once linked by a long avenue of sphinxes, and a walk along part of it is an easy family outing.
Packages

Nile Cruise Luxor–Aswan — 4 Nights
Four nights on a 5-star ship between Luxor and Aswan, with temples and tombs visited each day from the river. Luxury ships start at about 5,250 SAR per person.

VIP Cairo & Pyramids — 3 Nights
A 5-star hotel, a senior Egyptologist for two days and a van with driver throughout — Cairo at your own pace.
West Bank: Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut
Across the river lie the Valley of the Kings, including the tomb of Tutankhamun, the Valley of the Queens and the terraced temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari (UNESCO). The standard ticket covers a set number of tombs, with some tombs ticketed separately; a licensed guide will help you choose the most rewarding ones for your family.
Start as early as possible: the valley is a hot, enclosed desert, and mornings are far more comfortable. The Colossi of Memnon are a quick stop on the way back.
Hot-air balloon at sunrise — licensed operators only
A sunrise balloon flight over the West Bank is one of Luxor's most memorable experiences. Flights are regulated by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority and depend entirely on the weather: they are cancelled when morning winds are too strong, and in 2026 the authority suspended flights over the hottest months, from 1 June to 31 August (Le Petit Journal).
- We only coordinate flights with licensed operators.
- Expect a very early pick-up, before dawn.
- Keep a spare morning in your plan in case of cancellation.
- Check age and health limits with the operator before booking, especially for young children, pregnancy or back problems.

Where your Nile cruise begins
Luxor is one end of the classic Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan; the shorter cruises take three to four days, while longer itineraries add more stops (Egypt Tours Plus). Along the way, ships usually stop at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo. A cruise suits families well: you unpack once, and the scenery comes to you. Read our Nile cruise guide and see the Nile cruise Luxor–Aswan package below.
A simple three-day plan
- Day 1: arrive, rest, and visit Luxor Temple in the evening.
- Day 2: balloon at sunrise (if flying), then the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple; afternoon by the pool.
- Day 3: Karnak in the morning, a felucca on the Nile at sunset, then board your cruise or fly on.
