Cairo for Gulf families: where to stay, what to see and how to get around
Cairo is where most family trips to Egypt begin. Here is how to choose a neighbourhood, plan the Pyramids and the new Grand Egyptian Museum, and move around the city calmly with a private driver.
Where families stay: Zamalek, New Cairo or Sheikh Zayed
Cairo is huge, and traffic decides how your days feel. Choosing the right base matters more than choosing the right hotel.
- Zamalek — a leafy island in the Nile, central and walkable, with cafés, river views and short drives to downtown, Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo.
- New Cairo (Fifth Settlement) — east of the city, newer and quieter, with large compounds, international schools, hospitals and big malls. Many Gulf families already know it.
- Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October — west of the city, close to the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, with gated compounds and family restaurants.
| Hotel | Serviced apartment | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Short stays, couples, VIP trips | Families of 4+, stays of a week or more |
| Space | Connecting rooms needed | Separate bedrooms, living room, kitchen |
| Services | Daily housekeeping, restaurants, concierge | Varies by building; check housekeeping and security |
| Privacy | Shared lobbies and pools | More private, closer to home life |
Tell us your family size, the ages of the children and whether you prefer a Nile view or a quiet compound, and we will shortlist options that fit.
The Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum
The Pyramids and the Sphinx are best seen early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds. Right next to the plateau stands the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which officially opened on 1 November 2025 with around 50,000 artefacts and, for the first time, the complete treasures of Tutankhamun (Euronews).
At opening, the adult ticket for foreign visitors was EGP 1,450 — roughly 105 SAR (The New Arab). Tickets are sold online with a timed entry slot, and on-site sales were stopped from 1 December 2025 (Enterprise). Book a few days ahead, especially at weekends and in school holidays, and check the official site for current prices.
A practical plan: Pyramids in the morning, lunch, then the museum in the afternoon. With young children, split it into two days.

Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili
Historic Cairo is a UNESCO World Heritage site, listed in 1979 (World Heritage Site). Families usually focus on a few highlights:
- The Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with wide views over the city.
- Al-Azhar Mosque, the Mosque of Ibn Tulun and the Sultan Hassan Mosque.
- Al-Muizz Street and Bab Zuweila, best walked in the late afternoon.
- Khan el-Khalili — the old bazaar for lanterns, spices, silver and perfume oils; livelier in the evening.
- Coptic Cairo — the Hanging Church and the old churches and synagogue of the historic quarter, a calm half-day.
Dress modestly for mosques and churches; women will need a headscarf in mosques. A licensed guide makes these areas far easier with children.
Family activities beyond the monuments
- An evening Nile dinner cruise or a felucca ride at sunset.
- Al-Azhar Park for a picnic and a view of the old city's minarets.
- Malls, cinemas and play areas in New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed for hot afternoons.
- Egyptian food: koshari, feteer and grills — we can suggest family-friendly restaurants.
From October to April the days are milder and best for walking; in summer, keep outdoor sites for early morning.
Getting around: a car with a driver
For families, a private car with a driver is the simplest way to move around Cairo. We arrange it with a licensed Egyptian transport company, which operates and invoices the service. Indicative rates: a sedan with driver 375–560 SAR per day, a family van 790–1,125 SAR per day, and a Cairo airport transfer 65–310 SAR one way. See transport options.
Treatment while you are in Cairo
Many families combine a holiday with a check-up or a planned procedure. Cairo has a wide choice of independent licensed doctors and hospitals. You can start with a video consultation, then we coordinate appointments, translation and transfers. Common requests include full check-ups, dental care, eye and LASIK assessments and orthopaedics; if someone feels unwell at the hotel, we can arrange a hotel doctor visit. Clinical decisions belong to the doctor, and prices are indicative until the clinic reviews your case.
A day trip to Ain Sokhna
Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea is about 115 km from Cairo — roughly 75 minutes to under two hours by road, depending on where you start (Nawy). It is an easy day at the beach or a two-night break; see the Ain Sokhna weekend.

Questions people ask
Which area of Cairo is best for a family with young children?
New Cairo or Sheikh Zayed usually suit families with young children: more space, compounds with gardens and big malls. Sheikh Zayed is closer to the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum; Zamalek is better if you want to be central.
How much is a Grand Egyptian Museum ticket and do I need to book?
At opening the foreign adult ticket was EGP 1,450 (about 105 SAR). Tickets are sold online with a timed entry slot and on-site sales were stopped from December 2025, so book ahead and check the official site for current prices.
Is it better to rent a car or hire a car with a driver in Cairo?
For visitors, a car with a driver is far easier: Cairo traffic and parking are demanding. We arrange the car through a licensed transport company; a sedan costs about 375–560 SAR a day and a family van about 790–1,125 SAR.
Can I see a doctor during my holiday in Cairo?
Yes. We can arrange a video consultation before you travel, an appointment with an independent licensed doctor or hospital, or a hotel doctor visit. The doctor decides on treatment and the clinic sets the final price.
