Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan: itinerary, duration and the best time to sail

A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is one of the world’s great journeys: temples, green riverbanks and villages that seem outside time, seen from the deck of a boat. This guide explains the usual routes and durations, what a typical day-by-day itinerary looks like, when to go, and how to choose a boat that suits a Gulf family.

Which direction, and how many nights?

  • Luxor to Aswan: usually 4 nights, sailing upstream with time at each stop.
  • Aswan to Luxor: usually 3 nights, the same sites in a shorter programme.
  • Round trip: usually 7 nights, starting and ending in Luxor.

Exact days and the order of visits vary from boat to boat, so always check the programme of the specific sailing you book.

A typical itinerary: Luxor to Aswan in 4 nights

  • Day 1, Luxor: board the boat; visit Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple.
  • Day 2, West Bank of Luxor: the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon; sail south through the Esna lock.
  • Day 3, Edfu and Kom Ombo: the Temple of Horus at Edfu, then the riverside temple of Kom Ombo in the late afternoon.
  • Day 4, Aswan: the High Dam, Philae Temple and a felucca sail around the islands; an optional early trip to Abu Simbel.
  • Day 5: breakfast on board and disembark in Aswan.

When is the best time to go?

October to April is the most comfortable season, with warm days and cool evenings. In summer, temperatures in Luxor and Aswan regularly pass 40°C, so visits start very early in the morning and the middle of the day is spent on board. Winter is also the busiest season, so book early for school holidays.

Choosing a boat

  • Booked through a licensed Egyptian tour operator
  • Cabins with a large window or balcony; connecting or family cabins if travelling with children
  • A shaded sun deck and a pool for the hot months
  • Halal food, which is standard on Egyptian boats
  • Guided visits available in Arabic

Getting to Luxor or Aswan

Most guests fly from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, about an hour in the air. There is also an overnight sleeper train from Cairo for those who prefer it.

Combining a cruise with a medical trip

Many Gulf patients add a cruise to a treatment trip. Ask your treating doctor before booking: after some procedures you need rest, or should avoid strong sun, heat or swimming for a while, and the cruise should come after that period rather than during it.

Practical tips

  • Pack light: cabin storage is limited on smaller boats
  • Bring sun protection; the light on the river is intense
  • Tickets for Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings are sold separately
  • Carry some cash for tips and small purchases at the stops
