Need a doctor in Egypt? A practical guide for Gulf visitors and families

Most family trips to Egypt go without a single visit to a doctor. But a fever at night, a child’s ear infection or a broken tooth on day two can spoil a holiday. Here is what to do, who to call and how to get a licensed doctor to your hotel.

In short: In a medical emergency in Egypt, call 123 for an ambulance. For non-emergencies — fever, stomach upset, heat exhaustion, a child’s infection, toothache — a licensed doctor, nurse or dentist can usually visit your hotel or see you the same day. Pharmacies are widespread and many open late. Keep your travel insurance details and any regular medicines with you.

If someone has chest pain, difficulty breathing, a serious injury, sudden weakness or loss of consciousness, call 123 or go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department. Do not wait for a hotel doctor.

The most common problems on holiday

  • Heat exhaustion and dehydration — especially in summer and on day trips.
  • Stomach upsets — often from a change in food or water.
  • Sunburn and minor injuries — reef cuts, sprains, scrapes.
  • Children’s fevers and ear or throat infections — common after flights and swimming.
  • Toothache or a broken tooth or filling.

A doctor at your hotel

Many large hotels have an on-call doctor. If yours does not, or you prefer a doctor who speaks Arabic and knows Gulf families, Hayakkom can coordinate a licensed doctor to visit you. Choose what you need:

All of these are on our doctor at your hotel page. The doctor sets the fee and makes the medical decisions; we arrange the visit and stay with you on WhatsApp.

Pharmacies and medicines

Pharmacies are easy to find in Egyptian cities and resorts, and many are open late or around the clock. Bring regular medicines in their original packaging with a copy of the prescription, and keep them in your hand luggage. Some medicines may have a different brand name in Egypt, so the pharmacist or a doctor can help you find the equivalent.

Travel insurance and payment

Travel insurance that covers medical treatment abroad is strongly recommended. Keep the policy number and the insurer’s emergency phone number on your phone. Some hospitals ask for payment or a deposit first and you claim back later, so check what your policy requires before you travel.

A short checklist before you fly

  1. Regular medicines and prescriptions for every family member.
  2. A small kit: paracetamol, oral rehydration salts, sunscreen, plasters, an antiseptic.
  3. Travel insurance details saved on your phone.
  4. Allergies and blood groups noted for each person.
  5. Hayakkom’s WhatsApp saved: +20 103 156 7949.
